You know how harmful sugary drinks are for your oral health. So, what about energy drinks? Energy drinks are marketed widely for mental alertness and high energy levels. The ingredients included in energy drinks are taurine, caffeine, guarana, and lots of sugar.
These energy drinks with high sugar and acidity levels are a big NO when it comes to your oral health. Drinking such sugary beverages will cause irreversible damage to your tooth enamel which makes the teeth more prone to decay and cavities.
Some bacteria, which are naturally present in our mouth, consume sugar from the energy drinks which results in acid formation. When this acid maintains contact with the tooth enamel for a long period, it weakens the tooth enamel.
Also, energy drinks are known for having very low levels of pH, which makes them acidic when compared to soda or any other drink. Enamel will dissolve in these kinds of highly acidic drinks. And because the enamel is weakened due to the acidity, it results in cavities and tooth decay.
These energy drinks may also cause hyperactivity which makes people want to grind their teeth, resulting in tooth breakage.
If cutting down on energy drinks is hard for you, always remember to rinse your mouth after drinking them. Drink plenty of water to counteract the occurrence of acid formation.
Also, never brush your teeth immediately after drinking energy drinks as it can spread the acid to the other areas around your mouth. It also causes tooth erosion. To prevent such things from happening, wait an hour before brushing.
Oral health is important to ensure overall health. Consider reducing the consumption of energy drinks and sugary treats if you are unable to stop them altogether.
