Tooth Extractions in Walnut Creek, CA

Tooth extraction is the permanent removal of teeth from the oral cavity. This extraction includes the removal of the tooth's roots that are implanted in the jawbone and help hold our teeth firmly in place. At Ygnacio Dental in Walnut Creek, CA 94596, we perform gentle tooth extractions, wholly from crown to root. Since the procedure can cause pain and discomfort, we will administer local anesthesia before beginning the process. The sedative will help numb the oral tissues and prevent pain.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Cavities

Cavities are the most common reason for a tooth extraction. They are caused by harmful bacteria that produce acid that leads to the decay of tooth tissues and demineralization. If not treated promptly, the cavities can advance into the root canal cavity and cause an infection. Before considering an extraction, we may try other means of treatment to save the tooth. But if the tooth is beyond any therapy, we would suggest its removal.

Impacted Teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth can result in severe pain in the jaws and significantly increase oral infections. Routine oral activities like biting and chewing food would become difficult. Hence, the best way to treat this condition is by extracting the teeth.

External Trauma

External trauma can damage the teeth. This damage could be chipping or even a fracture. Before executing an extraction, we will try all possible means to restore such teeth to their previous condition, such as crowns, veneers, and composite bonding. But if the tooth is beyond salvage, we will have to pull it out.

Orthodontic Treatments

When you have to get orthodontic treatments to correct the teeth's alignment, extraction of a few teeth will be required to make way for the movement of teeth.

How Is an Extraction Performed?

Our dentists will comprehensively examine your mouth to determine if a tooth extraction is necessary. Once that has been decided, your tooth will be cleaned to remove the bacteria and saliva.  Anesthetic injections will be administered to numb the tooth, jawbone, and surrounding soft tissues. Once the anesthesia takes effect, we will pull the tooth firmly using dental forceps. It will be gently shaken to loosen the tooth from its socket, after which we will extract it in one swift movement.  If the tooth is impacted or stuck in the jawbone, we may have to slice it into smaller segments and remove them one at a time. The wound will be closed using a suture, and appropriate aftercare instructions will be given to enable proper healing.
